Popis: This paper studies the reasons behind the illegal use of electricity in Turkey. Cross-sectional data for 67 cities across seven regions in the country from the year 2009 were used. The Ordinary Least-Squares (OLS) regression model is applied in order to test for a correlation between illegal electricity usage and per capita income, illiteracy rate, unemployment rate, population size, governance, geographic regions and terrorist events. This paper also explores the regional effect on illegal electricity usage. This study concludes that illegal usage of electricity is highly correlated with the frequency of terrorist events, illiteracy rates, and regional differences.
