Popis: This paper analyzes and compares the protagonists of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye and Osamu Dazai’s “Schoolgirl” in how they view themselves, their surroundings, and what it is to grow up. Furthermore, it examines the differences and similarities between the views and thoughts of the two characters — a teenaged American boy and a teenaged Japanese girl — as well as which factors could contribute to these. With a theoretical framework based on intersectionality, both identity and social norms are discussed in relation to the aforementioned literary works. Moreover, the agency and possibility of growth for the protagonists are examined by utilizing the idea of the traditional Bildungsroman, the Entwicklungsroman, and the female Bildungsroman. Ultimately, though the main characters differ in terms of gender and cultural background/ethnicity, they share common ground in that they are both adolescents. The social norms imposed on them vary slightly, mostly due to their gender. These variations can be seen in conversations and meetings with others, as well as in their own thought processes. Nonetheless, they share similar opinions, thoughts, feelings, wishes, and fears, to the point where a sort of universal adolescent experience seems to permeate, at least in part, people of differing backgrounds.
