The thesis explores the Folkets Hus-movement in light of theories of deliberative democracy. The aim is to fill a research gap of how the Folkets Hus-movement can be understood today within the Swedish civil society and additionally, contribute with theoretical development concerning the significance of the public sphere. The study concludes that the Folkets Hus- movement has an ambition to contribute to democracy by creating public spheres for citizens and other actors to be, act, create as well as meet within. The movement creates an infrastructure that underpins the legitimacy of democracy by creating opportunities for deliberation to occur. The conclusion emphasizes the role of the public sphere within what legitimizes a democracy as they open up for citizens to meet and deliberate. |
