What makes people tend to appreciate some products more than others, those we never want to, or even need to replace? While other products don’t fulfill the same value for their owners, instead being thrown out, replaced and discarded before end-of-life? The problem is notoriously complex to analyze. Within the category of artwork there is scientific evidence of universal principles about what attracts human kind. Problems occurs when aesthetic durability is to be analyzed in physical products that mainly exist in order to fulfill a relevant and functional requirement. But can products be designed so that they, like artwork, can attract their users so well that they are not thrown out but used for several years? The report that you hold in your hand presents success factors for aesthetically durable products, which an industry designer can take into account in the development or further development of products, in order to suppress the unsustainable production and consumption of our time. The research method has been a comprehensive literature study and an interview study among Swedish companies that design and develop outdoor equipment. The project resulted in a new product development tool in the form of a design analysis containing 17 success factors with associated keywords that guides to achieve an aesthetically durable product design. The four most important success factors for aesthetical sustainability in products are minimalism, user-friendly design, identification and ability to upgrade. |
