In this literature review study Amanda Pontho and Ervin Omerovic have studied social relationships in multicultural classroom environments. The proposal of this study was based on literature and articles regarding the subject with several different, carefully chosen, doctoral dissertations. This study is also based on our personal experiences in the world of school and teaching. We have done a qualitative study where we’ve looked at the research done in different peer-reviewed studies and thus used what thoughts were for us most applicable. The Swedish curriculum doesn’t value and address the importance of having a stable and valuable relationship between the teacher and his or her students. What sparked the idea for us was that those valuable relations could be a little bit hard to obtain especially in a society currently embossed with multicultural differences. One of the sources hinted that a stable, yet early finished, and well tested school planning will consequently eliminate potential problems regarding what’s been teached or not. Problems start occurring when aspects like demographics, background, ethnicity and culture is taken into consideration, whether it's in civics or basic mathematics - divisive problems arise. Research also shows that teacher professionalism is based on two pillars, the first one being the teachers social and communicative abilities, the second one being the mass of knowledge. The conclusions were many due to the wide subject chosen. Conclusions from the teacher perspective, the preparatory work and the students perspective in regard to the accountable subject were drawn. Conclusions like good school planning, a teacher that establishes a good relationship with her students will thus generate better achieving students, teachers need to develop a readiness for the unpredictable and many more conclusions. |
