The aim of this study was to compare the breakfast habits among high school students enrolled in a sports class with those of students attending a non-sports class. The sample group of the study was selected from students in grade nine in a community in the south of Sweden. In total 81 students participated, of which 24 were boys and 20 were girls from the sports classes and 9 were boys and 28 were girls from the non-sports classes, in total 33 boys and 48 girls. The data relevant for the study was collected by questionnaires which at one single time were handed out, answered and handed back by the students. The questionnaire included questions regarding the students’ daily pattern, social attendence, exercise- and diet habits and breakfast habits. The result of the questionnaire showed that the majority of the students in the study had breakfast regardless if they were enrolled in a sports class or not. From those students who did not have breakfast the majority were enrolled in the non-sports class. The result also showed that the boys had breakfast more often than the girls and that the majority of those who did not have breakfast were girls. There were no statistical significance between the students’ sleeping habits and their breakfast habits, however, most of the students who did not have breakfast considered themselves to be evening persons. The conclusion of this study is that there were some tendencies that students enrolled in sports class had breakfast more often than the students in the non-sports class and that it mainly was the girls who skipped their breakfast. |
