The essay is a quantitative investigation with a focus on investigating child mortality in Västra Sallerup’s parish between 1880-1940. The social development in Eslöv is presented in the essay and put in relation to the potential change among the causes of death among the children. The source material used is based on Västra Sallerup’s church archives, where the death and burial books and parish extracts are the most relevant sources. The survey shows that the causes of death that are mainly present for children are in the category of childhood diseases. Furthermore, there was a change in the causes of death during the years 1880-1939. The causes of death in children range from infectious diseases to more chronic ones. When the children die, most are in infancy, so most children who die do pass away before their first birthday. Most children die between 0 days to 12 months of age. The result of the essay was that there are no remarkable differences between the causes of death in Eslöv town in comparison to the countryside. Finally, the investigation shows that Eslöv’s radical social development could possibly be a direct cause of the change in causes of death among the children. |
