This study is about incel involving people who have fallen into involuntarycelibacy. These people call themselves incels and believe that it is the fault ofwomen and society that they are in the situation they are in. Incels are agroup that has recently received more attention due to their strong opinionsand violent actions. However, there is not much research on incels yet and the one that isavailable is usually not so niche but more general. This study examines howmasculinity is constructed and maintained among incels and how masculinityaffects the stigma of incels. The method used in the study is netnography and the empirical data is takenfrom one of Intel's largest forums. The forum is called Incels.is and there arethousands who use hundreds of thousands of posts. Theories used in thestudy are hegemonic masculinity by Connell (2003) and Stigma by Goffman(2011). Theories are a support in the study to be able to understandmasculinity and the stigma of incels. In the analysis, a thematic analysis hasbeen used to be able to clearly present important parts of the empirical dataand make a good analysis. The results show that masculinity is something that is a social constructionand is created for several different reasons. It is a combination of gender andsociety that creates and maintains masculinity in a certain form. Thismasculinity creates both opportunities and limitations depending on whetheryou succeed in achieving it or not. Masculinity places you in a hierarchicalorder in society that determines your possibilities and it becomes extra clearwhen you look at Incel's situation. |
