In the last decade technological development has made tremendous progress. The increased globalization due to digitalization has changed the conditions for companies. Organizations today are constantly changing their structure in an attempt to cope with the increased competition that digitalization has entailed. However changing the structure of a company is not an easy thing to do. Companies are complex which means that change must be managed very carefully. Many models have been developed to try to help managers but still many attempts to change fails. Given the importance of the organizational structure and that change has become more common we wanted to study the change process that led to the new structure. The purpose of this thesis is to create an understanding of what the change process looks like in companies that change their organizational structure. Based on Kotter's eight step model and the ADKAR-model we want to study which factors are most important for a successful change. To fulfill our purpose we chose to do a qualitative study with an abductive approach. To gather information semi-structured interviews were conducted with respondents who all had leading roles during the change process. The study shows that both Kotter's eight step model and the ADKAR-model are reliable and gives a good understanding of how to deal with difficulties during the change process. However it does not seem necessary to follow all steps in the models. It is mainly the employees that are the key to a successful change. A strong culture can facilitate the change process. In our study it was also found that companies are careless in evaluating their change work which can cause companies to miss out on opportunities for improvement. |
