Introduction: The proportion of people with cognitive impairment is expected to increase dramatically in the future worldwide as the population ages and lives longer. The majority of all cognitive impairment is Alzheimer’s disease. People with Alzheimers’s disease have a broad, varied and complex need for care that is individual. To make the individual visible and avoid suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, knowledge, understanding and ability to work and care person-centered are needed. Aim: To compile and critically examine how research results describe the importance of person-centered care for patients with Alzheimer's disease. Method: Systematic literature study where nine qualitative articles were analyzed through a qualitative content analysis. Results: The results show the importance of person-centered care based on three categories: communication, presence and knowledge. Conclusion: It is important to nurture people with Alzheimer’s disease based on individual preferences, to highlight the person behind the diagnosis by actively listening, communicating, interacting and nurturing based on a holistic approach. It is of importance to include relatives in person-centered care. |
