This C-essay investigates how the small farming municipality of Hakarp, Sweden, could go from a traditional farming community to an industrialized community during the latter half of the 19th century. Natural resources, relatively close proximity to communications through waterways and main roads in combination with individual investors and popular demand for goods are factors that contributed to why this particular municipality became industrialized. The farming community ceased to develop and towards the last decade of the 19th century many farms were left abandoned and fields unploughed. Why this happened is not clear, but a probable cause is the centralization due to industrialization and the building of railroads, that led people to move away from the countryside. |
