Popis: This descriptive correlational study was designed to explore factors that influence critical care nurse's behavior toward family visiting. The Ajzen-Fishbein theory of reasoned action provided the framework to examine the relationship between the nurse's attitudes, subjective norms, and intentions toward structured and open family visiting. Data was collected through a researcher designed survey questionnaire completed by 279 members of the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses. The nurses' attitudes and subjective norms toward family visiting were closely linked to their beliefs, and these determinants correlated with their intentions toward open family visiting. Neither the nurses' educational level or critical care experience correlated with the nurses' attitudes toward open visiting. These findings suggest that nurses who work directly with critically ill patients need to participate in the design of visitation policies, and that unit managers who advocate open visiting need to provide nurses with resources to facilitate the best visiting practice.
