This study employed a quasi-experimental research with pretest-posttest control group design to examine the effects of board games on fourth graders’ English vocabulary learning. Two classes of 55 fourth graders at a public elementary school in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, participated in this study. The experimental group, which received board games learning activities, consisted of 27 students, while the control group, 28 students, participated in learning sheets activities for 16 weeks, with once a week and 40 minutes. The instrumentation included pretest, posttest, and group guided writing to examine the participants’ performance on word form, word meaning, and word usage. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), Johnson-Neyman procedures, and Mann-Whitney U Test. The findings revealed that the board games activities effectively helped students to learn vocabulary. Specifically, the “board games” experimental group performed significantly better than the “learning sheet” control group on vocabulary knowledge of word form, word meaning, and word usage. Through classroom observations, it is found that board games activities provided students with many opportunities for oral practice, board games activities provided visual cues to increase the students’ comprehension of the meaning of vocabulary, and board game activities helps students to develop their syntax knowledge. Based on the results, suggestions and pedagogical implications for further studies have been addressed.
