Patients with diabetes are more susceptible to infection during the wound healing process as bacteria thrive on the excess sugar. Silver-based antiseptics driven by its passive Ag+ release upon oxidation in air have been widely used in the treatment of chronic wounds; however limited studies focused on stimuli-responsive, controllable Ag+ dissolution antibacterial systems. In this study, we employed gallic acid-capped silver nanoparticles (GA-AgNPs), which could be easily synthesized under mild condition, as nanoscale metal templates to enable its coordinated assembly to agglomerates in a hierarchical configuration by hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of GA and Zn2+. Coordinated Zn2+ further facilitated the immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) which allowed GOx-catalyzed H2O2 generation and the nearby GA-AgNPs oxidation to release Ag+, improving the antibacterial activity in the presence of high glucose level. We expect the newly developed granular composites could serve as new type of antibacterial agents for diabetic wound treatment.
