During the short 6 years, Taiwan Daily News in Chinese which was independently published by Taiwan Daily News (1905-1911) recorded Taiwan’s social common practice, news, custom and tradition, cultural activities and so on and so forth. It is one of important historical data to explore early Japanese colonial period. The study concentrates on the ghosts from the news “Taiwan Daily News in Chinese” to analyze and understand the image of related news, reporters’ and contributors’ opinions of the word ghosts and clarify the social and cultural meaning behind the related news about ghosts. This study contained 5 chapters. The first part is introduction that described the motivation and purpose, research areas, research method, previous research results and the definition and concept of ghosts of this study. Chapter 2 is to analyze the background of releasing Taiwan Daily News in Chinese, and understand the development of folk belief in Taiwanese society in Japanese colonial period. Chapter 3 categorized the reports of ghosts and explore the situation of Taiwanese society presenting on the newspapers and also from superstitious, education, humanity weakness, witches aspects and so on and so forth. Chapter 4 analyzed related “ghosts” news about the influence of them to Taiwanese folk belief in life and customs. In addition, this chapter also included the exploration of picking up people, warning world by ghosts and transforming from ghosts to gods. Chapter 5 is concluding the content of chapter 4 and the research finding and future research from the author.
