The detection and presentation of three-dimensional objects in real space have gradually drawn intensive attention in many recent research activities and are employed in many applications. This thesis proposes a partially concrete or semi-volumetric three-dimensional (3D) display system. This display system can form the concrete body of a part of the convex three-dimensional object (convex object). The displayed object is composed of an array of volumetric elements (voxels), each of which is realized by the movable end of a rod driven by a stepping motor. The signal that changes the position of the rod comes from the depth information which is represented in the form of light displayed in two-dimensional display device. In addition, by attaching a tactile sensor to the surface of each rod’s end, the volumetric 3D display device can be converted to a shape detector of 3D objects.This function can be used for the recognition and modeling of 3D objects. A low-resolution prototype is implemented to verify the idea proposed in this thesis. The outcome of several experimentations based on this prototype show that can successfully present the concrete surface of 3D objects and roughly detect the shape of 3D objects.
