'Our fight and flight '–The Avoidance Process of Working Holiday Makers in Australia

The study is aimed to investigate the avoidance process of working holiday makers by narrative research and in-depth interview. The purposes consist of the following: Why did they choose to leave Taiwan to working holiday in Australia? How did they got along with their troubles during working holiday? The impact of working holiday experiences on stress coping for coming back in Taiwan. And the meaning of working holiday for them. Researcher used purposive sampling to invited five participants, analysis their experience by the holistic-content reading. Research conclusions are as follows: 1. Participants had tried to coping the stress, but it was useless, or not as expected. Therefore, they decide to go working holiday for leaving Taiwan. 2. Avoidance is effective in reduced pressure for temporary. If the troubles are about occupational environment, financial pressure, burnout, the pressure will become smaller or even relieved after switch to new occupational environment and raise income. If the trouble is about family, it will be better when person at a distance from family. 3. For new stressful events, participants took a similar stress coping. It should be related to the individual''s stress coping style. There are two reasons have impacted on stress coping change: (1) It is depends on the object of avoidance is the personal or the environmental level, the difficulty of coping is different. (2) Whether the individual examined their experience to get self-awareness. Integrating insight and understanding conduces to self-transformation, to get more self- resources, change mental process and cognition of stressful events. It will help with coping stress. 4. They took the same way, but different scenery on their way. As a whole, they were satisfied with their working holiday. The “avoidance” of stress coping theory by Lazarus and Folkman, means got away from stress situation. Therefore, it has been classified as negative coping. However, it was found that the "avoidance” of stress coping also has positive meaning from the study conclusion. Change situation is effective in reduced pressure for temporary, and raises conversion space and resources. New experience in different environments can foster personal transformations, such as individuality, value, self-concept, frames in thought, behavioral model. It is helpful for developing new ways of stress coping.
