A Study on Architectural Culture of Matchmaking Deity Temple in Taiwan

| Popis: | 107 In ancient times, arranged marriages dominate love marriages, pursuit of true love conflict with tradition, hence faith of “Matchmaking Deity” merges. But in conservative Chinese society, people pray to “Matchmaking Deity” for blessing is in a minority. Even there is a dedicated idol for “Matchmaking Deity” in the temple, it represents only the associated one instead of the primary. Nowadays, as social structure changes rapidly followed by the blooming of romantic love, people tend to be more open for love pursuing, which contributes to the fashion of praying to “Matchmaking Deity”. There are numerous temples start to enshrine “Matchmaking Deity”, not only as associated but also as the primary deity in Taiwan at present. To comply with the social demand, modern temple differs a lot from traditional temple not only on idol figure` type of structure` appearance, but also the ritual` management philosophy` and the connection to society. We took four of the temples which enshrine “Matchmaking Deity＂ as our investigation cases, the contents will depict structure types for Ｗan Li Ching Matchmaking Deity Temple（萬里情月老廟）、Chung Li Matchmaking Deity Temple（中壢月老宮）、 Longshan Temple（艋舺龍山寺）、Xia.Hai Temple（霞海城隍廟）and analyze the similarities and difference between modern and traditional temples. Furthermore, intensively study from external structure presentation` spatial layout to internal ritual will also be conducted for realizing the development of faith of “Matchmaking Deity”. |
