Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a necessary route for hemodialysis therapy to keep patient’s life and it has been called the line of life for uremic patients on hemodialysis. Poor function of their AVFs may lead to inadequate hemodialysis and thus affect the patient’s quality and outcome. Therefore, it is important to do a good AVF care. At present clinical care, angiography and ultrasound are usually used to evaluate the shunt condition and determine its degree of stenosis (DOS). However, these two methods are not simple but expensive and unsuitable for real-time assessments on AVF care during hemodialysis therapy. For this reason, our study proposed a real-time rule-based method for evaluating shunt occlusions. This method used the Doppler ultrasound to measure the blood flow of multiple sites stenosis in AVF. We measured the blood flow in the AVF and arteriovenous anastomosis sites. Two features were extracted : the average flow rate (AFR) and the ratio of flow variation (RFV). In this clinical study, 60 patients were examed and our results showed that when DOS increased, AFR gradually decreased. RFV reached the highest in moderate shunt stenosis and the lowest in mild shunt stenosis. This difference was statistically significant between groups (p
