This short film “The Gaze” discusses a 48-year-old figure model, Wei-su fell off from the platform and broke her leg in a nude painting session due to her menopause. Wei-xin who is Wei-su’s daughter came home to take care of her. Wei-xin found her childhood painting “My Mother” and recalled of how she needed to bear with the prejudice in her mother’s profession during her childhood. Wei-su was just entirely focused on her career, but somehow ignored the feeling of Wei-xin. This has cause argument between Wei-su and Wei-xin. Eventually, Wei-su overcame the restriction of her injured body and created a new body posture with her leg in plaster. Wei-xin realised that her mother is not good in expressing emotions verbally, but Wei-xin managed to grasp the true value of figure model from Wei-su through her actual body action. This creation description observes the development of figure model in art history from the East to the West and discusses of how to gaze the body in the Taiwan social culture background. It also explores on how the figure model inspire the painter through their body’s posture. With the theme of menopausal women, “The Gaze” shows how the models in this period can adapt to the changes in her body and creates a new appearance. “The Gaze” also includes the family issue between mother and daughter relationship and brings out the dilemma of the model in her career and family. There is an opportunity to repair and rebuild the broken relationship through communication. In addition, by using the framing of shots in the film, “The Gaze” develops the director’s own narrative in the sense of estrangement and intimacy between mother and daughter.
