An Action Research on Competence-Based Social Studies Curriculum for Elementary School Senior Grades – Teaching Module for Inquiry and Practice

The purpose of this study is to design a competence-based curriculum module with inquiry and practical ability, and to focus on the "international issues" in the social studies for elementary school senior grades. In the process of curriculum design, development and implementation, we will understand the dilemmas and solutions encountered in implementing the curriculum, the performance of students' inquiry ability and the professional growth of teachers. This is an action research. The participants are four classes in sixth grade attending an elementary school in New Taipei City. The curriculum is designed and implemented in a teacher community. The data includes the class teacher’s records and reflection, interviews with fellow teachers and students, and the study of student study forms. By coding the qualitative data, and records the research result is presented using quantitative data. The results of this research were classified as follows: 1.The research developed design a competence-based curriculum module with inquiry and practical ability 2.The researcher faced some difficulties during the research: (1). Teaching design does not match the actual teaching situation. (2). Researchers underestimate the difficulty of implementing the “Civic Action Phase” and the student’s civic actions are limited by the social environment. 3.After the implementation of inquiry and practice curriculum, through teacher guidance, it was discovered students are found to have a wealth of opportunities to inquiry ability in this course. 4.During the teacher community operation, the teacher’s professionalism in inquiry teaching grew as a result of repeated contemplation, teaching quality improvement, and putting theories into practice.
