A Study on Relationship among Preschool Children's Negative Emotions, Behavior Problems and Coping Strategies of Mothers in Central Taiwan

The study aimed to investigate current status and differences between background variables, and further relationship among preschool children’s negative emotions, behavior problems and coping strategies from mothers in central Taiwan. The study had employed questionnaire survey, using a questionnaire titled “Preschool Children’s Negative Emotions, Behavior Problems and Coping Strategies of Mothers in Central Taiwan” as the research tool. Stratified random sampling was conducted, with total of 1,159 participants, sampling from children who enrolled in either public prschools and private preschools in central Taiwan. There were 983 questionnaires collected, and 928 of them were effective. The researcher applied descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way analyses of variance, and Pearson’s product-moment correlation for data statistical analyses. Conclusions were summed up as follows: 1. The overall preschool children in central Taiwan showed negative emotions and behavior problems at a frequency below average level. 2. Mothers’ coping strategies of preschool children’s negative emotions and behavior problem in central Taiwan showed that “appease” strategies were applied more frequently than “ignore” strategies. 3. The preschool children’s negative emotions, behavior problems in central Taiwan showed significant differences dependent upon differences shown in background variables of children’s genders and age, study areas, main caregivers, parents’ age and mothers’ education levels. 4. Coping strategies of mothers in central Taiwan showed significant differences dependent upon differences shown in background variables of children’s study area, monthly household income, main caregiver, fathers’ age, parents’ education levels and occupations. 5. The statistics showed significant correlation between preschool children’s negative emotions as well as behavior problems and coping strategies of mothers in central Taiwan. Preschool children whose mothers used more coping strategies of “appease” showed fewer negative emotions and less behavior problems.
