Filial piety, its connotation and dilemma between Parent-child: A phenomenological study by Levinas\' philosophical concern

Background & Objective: In traditional Chinese culture, filial piety is the most important of all virtues. Even though times have changed, even though the implication of filial piety changed in the context of modern Chinese culture, filial piety is still an important ethical concept that order the adult child must obey their parents. The thesis is focused on the adult child who faced the pressure of filial piety when they also in self-growth. The experience of internal conflict and struggle will cause adult child must make a prompt decision to respond the ethical duties. In my view, filial piety at this moment will change it essence that become an actual responsibility and ethics. Therefore, Levinas' philosophical concern can deeply close the experiences with conflict which is an ethical relationship between the self and the other. Method & Result: This thesis used a face-to-face interview to collect conflict experience of filial piety from 4 subjects (2 men and 2 women). Using interpretative phenomenological analysis(IPA) to analyze the texts, came to the following findings: (1) Filial piety’s originality is “care”. (2) The moment of suffering makes a qualitative change in filial piety. (3) This thesis used “Il y a” to interpreted the experience of internal conflict and struggle. Discussion & Conclusion: First, the thesis try to discuss and response the model of dual filial piety which constructed by Yeh, K. H.(2003). Second, Clinical implications are suggested.
