This study aimed to examine English teacher education candidates’ motivations for teaching from central Taiwan and to investigate the relevance of gender and their motivations for choosing teaching as a career. The present study also explored their inclination to change their profession and the solution strategies if in the absence of teacher vacancy. Factors Influencing Teaching Choice Scale (Watt & Richardson, 2007) was used, and 100 English teacher education candidates were surveyed. The findings revealed that altruistic values of teaching were the key career motivations for the participants to choose teaching as a career. Both male and female participants had stronger altruistic motivations, and there were no significant differences between the genders in teaching motivations. In the face of the shortage of teacher vacancies, more than half of the participants said that they might give up being teachers and try to do another job, and the rest of the participants (about one fourth of the participants) would insist on looking for teaching jobs, most of which is due to the passion for teaching. This study provided a better understanding of pre-service English teachers’ teaching motivations for teacher training institutes as a reference for curriculum development and planning of teacher education.
