The major byproduct of biomass gasification power plants is biochar, which has been widely known to be beneficial to soil quality and plant productivity. Caliandra calothyrsus recently utilized in biomass power plants in Indonesia, because it has a caloric value of 4800 kcal/kg and a wood yield of around 50 m3/ha. The aim of this study is to establish a circulating and sustainable feedstock system for the biomass power plant. The effect of biochar on the nursery of Caliandra calothyrsus seedlings was conducted. The biochar from gasification-processed palm kernel shells mixed with fermented chicken manure, called bokashi, was applied in soil in various ratios, and subject to the increase of Caliandra calothyrsus yield. Experiments were processed on the Island of Kundur, Riau Islands Province, Indonesia. A half year of nursery planting for Caliandra calothyrsus was performed. Seedlings that meet the requirements for field planting were counted, and their height, and diameter measured. Then a one-year trial of field planting was performed with treatments similar to nursery planting. Furthermore, another one-year trial was performed with rubberwood biochar, which is abundant in the area. Biochar was used as a mulching trial conducted with the aim of increasing Caliandra growth. It was concluded that the best application rate of biochar in Caliandra calothyrsus nursery planting would be bokashi plus palm kernel shell biochar at a rate of 2 kg and 1 kg/plot respectively. For the field planting, it is recommended that 200 gram bokashi plus 2 kg or 2.5 kg palm kernel shell biochar be applied per pit. Plantation with rubberwood biochar also showed higher wood and leaf yield. It was concluded that the application of biochar in Caliandra calothyrsus nursery planting, field planting, and mulching could be included in the circulation system of the biomass power plant for establishing sustainable feedstock.
