Exploring the Influences of Outpatient Physician-Patient Communication to Physician-Patient Relationship: The Mediating Effect of Trust

| Popis: | 107 Nowadays, medical disputes appear frequently, most of which occur due to poor communication between physicians and patients. Good communication helps to establish and maintain physician-patient relationships. Physician-patient communication serves as a channel to enhance patients’ trust in physicians while trust plays an important role in maintaining the relationship between physicians and patients. This study, with outpatients as its research participants, explores the relationships among physician-patient communication, trust and physician-patient relationship. This study uses the questionnaire survey method to investigate the outpatients of a general teaching hospital in central Taiwan. In July of 2018, 1,088 copies of the questionnaire were distributed and 1,060 valid ones were returned. In order to verify the hypothesis, this study uses correlation analysis, structural equation modeling (SEM) and bootstrapping to process data analysis. The study results shows that (1) physician-patient communication has a positive impact on the physician-patient relationship; (2) physician-patient communication has a positive impact on trust; (3) trust has a positive impact on physician-patient relationship; and (4) trust has a partially mediating effect on the relationships between physician-patient communication and physician-patient relationship. This study demonstrates the relationships among physician-patient communication, trust and physician-patient relationship. The research results not only expand the research field of trust, physician-patient communication and physician-patient relationship, but also confirm the mediating role of patients’ trust in physician-patient communication and their relationship. It is recommended that both physicians and patients should value communication and fully discuss important issues through communication, which can enhance patients’ trust in physicians and promote their relationship. In addition, hospitals can actively design and improve physician-patient communication schemes so as to encourage patients to actively participate in their treatment decision-making process. This way, a good physician-patient relationship is expected to be established. |
