In this thesis, we propose and demonstrate three research sections including the novel free space optical communication (FSO) transmission system, stable and tunable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser system, and the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based semicircular sensor architecture with fiber fault monitoring, respectively. In the first section, we propose a bidirectional wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) FSO system integrated with fiber access network for wireless traffics. Here, four 10 Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) signals can propagate through a 25 km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission and a 6 m free space transmission length. After through simulation of optics design, the proposed FSO system could also achieve 1000 m free space transmission length. In the second section, to reach a widely wavelength-selectable and stable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) EDF ring laser, the unpumped EDF-based saturable absorber (SA) and dual-ring structure are used simultaneously for thickly multi-longitudinal-mode (MLM) suppression. The dual-ring scheme can also spread the operation range of gain medium from 1520.0 to 1580.0 nm only by using a C-band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). In the final section, we present and investigate a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based semicircular sensor architecture with fiber fault monitoring experimentally. Two erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) are used in the monitoring center to generate a broadband light source for sensing the strain and temperature simultaneously. In addition, the proposed sensor system can monitor one to two fiber faults.
