Workers in the powder coating workplace may subject to hazardous agent exposure. To prevent the workers of powder coating industries from adverse health effects, ventilation system is adopted to control the exposure level. However, the efficacy of various ventilation systems currently used by the powder coating factories needed to be investigated. The results show that inward air flow at the opening and negative pressure differential of the chamber is required to guarantee certain effectiveness of the ventilation system. Total dust concentration decreases as the opening face velocity increases. According to the velocity measurement, it is found that uniform velocity distribution yields better ventilation performance to prevent powder from emission to the working environment. By comparing the powder size distribution measured in the chamber and environment, there exists obvious difference for better design of ventilation system. The direction, pattern and uniformity of airflow at the opening of the powder chamber as well as the negative pressure differential are important design factors of ventilation system. The total dust concentration and powder size distribution maybe also regarded as the performance index of the ventilation system.
