It starts out by talking about the landform, climate and fluvial environment of the area, building a connection between these natural factors and the historic flood that took place 174 years ago. The sandy soil and rich tributaries of the region, coupled with the industrial structural adjustment directed by the government and the impact of human activity, have caused the land and houses to subside over the years. In recent years, extreme weather caused by global climate change has also increased the chances of heavy rainfall and flood significantly, jeopardizing the safety and property of local residents. Under such circumstances, the practice of quianshuizang has naturally become invested with spiritual significance. Next, I analyze the tradition and evolution of the ceremony, identifying old and modern elements such as water lantern, yoke-borne meal offering, and cultural scholar exchange and pointing out how these help preserve the memory of the traumatic event through the annual ceremonial performance which, together with the mass grave, Wanshantungguei gravestone (literally: “ten thousand kindness have the same destination”), and Wanshan temple in the area, have established a religious sphere that illustrates the residents’ reverence for and imagination of nature, serves as a way to invoke ancestral blessings and bring peace to all beings, and becomes a local feature that helps strengthen local community. In recent years, under the influence of cultural creative marketing, the ceremony has further transformed into a tourist attraction. |
