In line with the accelerating pace of change in a globalizing economy, every second counts in international competition, bringing new opportunities for development to multinational Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which nonetheless face greater existential pressures and challenges. To survive and thrive in an ultra-competitive business environment, strengthening and establishing improved internal management controls, thereby achieving working capital stability, is an important task. The operational scope of SMEs and multinational SMEs is comparatively reduced; their working capital is limited; their ability to react to severe fluctuations in the economic environment is less than large enterprises; and changing factors can lead to increasing difficulties in their financial assessments. In order to improve both the widespread working capital shortfall in multinational SMEs and their performance in the above-mentioned circumstances, to allow such enterprises to stably sustain their operations, and via internal control procedures, this thesis will consider multinational SMEs’ internal control policy for working capital, drawing upon the experience of an individual company to deliver recommendations and provide reference material for other multinational SMEs, international businesses and even micro-enterprises in the future. The multinational SME that is the focus of this research has already implemented changes in the process for its sales and purchasing cycles. Shortening the payment period for accounts receivable and extending it for accounts payable improves cash flow control and thereby the financial operation. The establishment of staff responsibilities for the audit of internal control procedures enables operational flexibility for cash and more detailed future planning.
