The relationship of anxiety trait, hostility trait with hypertension patients

Purpose: The present research was conducted to explore the relationship of anxiety trait and hostility trait with hypertension.Methods: The database collected from the project of “ Computerization of Chinese Hostility Inventory and Type D personality Inventory” (DTCRD98-19) supported by Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital to Chin-Lon Lin and projects of “ Development and evaluation of a group cognitive-behavior therapy with biofeedback-assisted programs for high risk populations of coronary artery heart disease ” (NSC102- 2410- H194- 022) and “ Development and evaluation of a group cognitive-behavior therapy with biofeedback-assisted programs for hypertension patients ” (NSC103- 2410- H- 194- 039- MY2) supported by the grants from Ministry of Science and Technology to Chia-Ying Weng. A sample of 385 participants was taken from the physical examination center, family medicine clinic, and cardiology clinic of a regional hospital. The participant who had hypertension history, antidepressants use or SBP≧140mmHg / DBP≧90mmHg in blood pressure measurement was assigned to a hypertensive group (n=117, age: 56.85 ± 9.55, male: 53%), others were assigned to a healthy group (n=268, age: 45.04 ± 15.09, male: 60%). The degree of anxiety trait was assessed by Trait Anxiety Inventory; The degree of hostility trait was assessed by Chinese Hostility Inventory: Short form. The binary logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship of psychological trait and hypertension risk adjusting for Socio-demographics (age, sex) and hypertension risk factors (family history of diseases, physical activity, alcohol use, and cigarette smoking).
