Movie Theaters have stood in great numbers in Taiwan that people can find the traces of theaters, but the democratization of televisions, the springing up of cable TV and videotapes, and the rampant piracy movies evanished theaters when time through the 1980s. Fortunately, the 1980s had been an important milestone in the development of Taiwan film industry, and the cutting-edge directors had shifted their lens to focus on island landscape, local history, or personal memories. Because of this accidental coincident, there was an opportunity to theaters to show up in front of the crowds. Among the directors after the period of Taiwan New Wave, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Wu Nien-Jen, and Tsai Ming-Liang particularly like to adopt movie theaters as the main topic in their feature films, and the coverage of the period of movie theaters they refer including from 1940s to 2000, this method could be regarded as using movies to record the recent theaters development history of Taiwan. Although from this point of view, it seems that we can find a kind of brand new possibility of movie theater history, we still must to pay attention that this shape of movie theaters space could never be real space, but the cinematic space in films. There are the uniqueness of movie language, directors’ aesthetic style, and the narrative of the story in the cinematic space. That is to say, when talking about the appearances of movie theaters in films, the way this dissertation adopted is mainly focusing on the cinematic space, referring everyday life, memory, and nostalgia. This dissertation not only develops both cinematic aesthetics and Taiwanese culture in a historical context but also examines the relationships among the aesthetic style, creative spectrum, and the space of movie theaters.
