An Appellative Research of the Spaces in Zhao'an Hakka Houses in Yunlin County

Popis: | 106 Language is a carrier of culture. If an ethnic group loses their own language, it nither has its own cultural identity, nor to be identified. Language is not only an important symbol of culture, but also a medium of cultural inheritance, transformation and continuation. In order to preserve ethnic culture, it is necessary to clarify the close interweaving of ethnic groups, languages and cultures. The ancestors of Zhao’an Hakka people for reclamation from their homeland to settle in Taiwan. They migrated and settled in various places throughout Taiwan, including Xiluo, Erlun and Lunbei in Yunlin County, most of Zhao’an Hakka people lived in. The main house type of the homeland is called Tulous, while Zhao’an Hakka people in Taiwan lives in San-Ho-Yuan because of the geographical location and the influences of surrounding ethnic groups, which similar to the house type of Hoklo people. With the change of living space, the concept of space, space and cultural meanings will be transformed. This research is based on the space appellations of Zhao’an Hakka houses, and discusses the names of indoor and outdoor spaces in Zhao’an Hakka area, and the spatial concepts and cultural implications implied by them. The research purpose is as follows: 1. To understand the names of indoor and ourdoor spaces of houses in Zhao’an Hakka area, Yunlin County; 2. To discuss the appellative composition of Zhao’an Hakka house and its meanings; 3. To Explore the evolution and signicance of the spatial appellations of Zhao’an Hakka houses. The study found the follows: 1) The house types of the Zhao’an Tulous in Fujian Province is quite different from that of the Zhao’an house type in Taiwan. Their spatial uses and appellations are therefore different; 2) The spatial names of early years are limited by shortage of vocabularies, and spatal names are therefore quite rare. Due to the changes of the times, the diversity of dwellingspaces has enriched, but the spatial names have not increased, which makes the newly emerged spaces to be called in Hoklo or Mandarin; 3) It is found in this study that Zhao’an Hakka language is moving towards Hoklo assimilation process. Based on the Zhao’an Hakka house studies, the vocabularies and meanings of building construction could be explored, and the construction characteristics of Zhao’an Hakka houses could be further discuss to learn more about the architectural crafts and culture of Zhao’an Hakka houses. |
