The Relationships of Exercise Participation, Intergenerational Relationship and Life Satisfaction of the Elderly

Background: “Active ageing” enhance quality of life in elderly, and exercise participation is the major process of it. Intergenerational programs have been reported to promote active aging. However, the relationships between intergenerational relationship, exercise participation and life satisfaction in elderly remain uncertain. The purpose of the study was to investigate the associations between these parameters in Taiwan, which may facilitate the future development of elderly care. Method: Questionnaires were used in this study which contained Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly, Intergenerational Relationship Scale for the Elderly and Taiwan Longitudinal Study in Aging of Life Satisfaction Index. The participant elder than 60-year-old were enrolled. Survey locations were Taipei, Taitung and Kaohsiung. A total of 220 questionnaires were distributed, among which 202 were valid. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, single-factor analysis of variance and Pearson's Basis correlation. Results: The average age of participant was 69 year-old. The numbers of male were 63. This study founds that 1. There was no difference among sex, health level, how many children and grandchildren they have. 2. There was difference between healthy and intergenerational relationship. 3. There was difference among sex, health level and life satisfacation of the elderly. 4. The exercise participation has a significant positive correlation with life satisfaction. Conclusions: 1. The grandchildren they have is highly, the physical activity in household is lower. 2. The health level is higher, intergenerational relationship is higher. 3. The life satistifaction in meal is better than female, the highly health level is, the life satisfaction is. 4. The highly exercise participation is, the life satisfaction is higher. Suggestions:It is important to increase the intergenerational relationship and life satisfaction to keep healthy from the elderly, the elderly need to manager the physical conditions of themselves that can let their family feel safe to keep the intergeneral relationship between the generations.
