Potehi is one of the most popular traditional performing arts. Glove puppets in early Taiwan were originally made by Quanzhou or by other areas in Fujian. These heads of puppets were so-called "Tang Shan heads" in Taiwan, which means they were heads from China. However, after 1949 Taiwan was controlled by R.O.C and all trading issues with Mainland China were prohibited. Since then China puppets were unable to being imported to Taiwan. This was absolutely a turning point. Many Taiwan local artists throw themselves into producing puppets actively due to the demands of Taiwanese market. Also with the development of Golden light glove puppets, the appearance of glove puppets in Taiwan became very various. The roles of early glove puppets were monotonous. Expect the role of "paint-face", ground paint of puppet heads were mainly red, black, blue, and especially white color. Not only glove puppets but also Chinese marionette puppets used same colors for the ground paint. Although there were written records about darkening process of the paints of early puppets, puppets performers and cavers spread it orally. However, with changes of substances used for paints, the color transformation doesn’t exist nowadays. Facial-paintings of glove puppets play a main role for the performer to express what they want to tell to the spectators. In the other hand, due to different substance of paints that affected the appearance of puppets, the color it changed itself into silver-gray by time and affected the quality of the show. Hence in this thesis I will start from painting substance for the puppets’ head by detecting with for example machine XRF or SEM/EDX. And then compare the data with past relative studies about substances used in the old time, trying to study the difference between substances in the past and today. To understand the possible reasons of discoloration, studying the differences of process of technique in different eras is also necessary. Moreover, based on those studies I will use modeling and simulation to discuss the way and possibility to repair darkening puppets’ head.
