Hao Yu-xiang’s Beitou writings is a journey of self-healing and self-reconciliation through the recollections of “a meaningful location”. 《逆旅》(A Journey to Return) can be considered as an important signature piece in Hao’s Beitou writings. In this book the author retraces the life and journey of her father all the way back to Shandong Province, China. Hao unrelentingly questions the concept of “hometown” and expresses self-doubt throughout the book. This highlights the theme “Beitou” which is also found in her works《幽冥物語》(Nether World) and《溫泉洗去我們的憂傷》(The Hot Spring Washes Away Our Sorrow). By writing about the connections with her own memories, the author transforms “Beitou” from a passively seen and recognized “space” into “a meaningful location” which carries a lifetime of memories and her own self-awareness. This paper focuses on the analyses of Hao’s works with additional information such as the life and background of the author and local history records as supplemental materials. The themes of self-identity, life metaphors and local memory found in these three books (《逆旅》、《幽冥物語》and《溫泉洗去我們的憂傷》) will be discussed. 《逆旅》is about the author’s re-discovery of self through the perspective of “hometown”, and this formed the internal motive for Hao’s Beitou writings. 《幽冥物語》carries on the theme and continues to decipher the reconstruction of “Beitou” and Hao’s life, which makes this book an important piece for understanding Hao’s Beitou writings.《溫泉洗去我們的憂傷》records the self-healing and self-reconciliation process the author underwent by remembering and writing about Beitou.
