Most simulation software that are used for fire evacuation research are biased toward the principle of rationality (intellect) in terms of simulating an evacuee’s behavior on escape route choice such as choosing the nearest exit. The simulation results are optimistic and can only be used as a reference because, in the event of a disaster, the evacuees are often unable to remain calm, and the consequent various irrational behaviors affect the escape procedure. Currently, there are very few software for the simulation of irrational behavior. To carry out the simulation and research for the related irrational behaviors, this study attempted to combine the advantages of grid architecture and vector architecture from GIS to develop an egress model, which can perform basic rational escape behavior simulation, and which also allows the users to utilize the specific booting parameters of this model to select the evacuee escape path. The addition of subsequent functions and the expansion of behavior rules have been taken into consideration while developing this model, so the architecture of this egress model is highly extensible. New functions can be added according to a user’s needs and the model can be updated by importing the detailed behavior formulas. The ultimate goal is to develop an egress model that can simulate both rational behaviors and various irrational behaviors to provide a more realistic reference for safety performance design.
