Objective: This study aims to explore the relationship between self-concept, peer social support and depression in Taiwanese adolescents, and whether such associations vary by gender is also examined. Methods: Data was collected from the Taiwan Youth Project research database of Academia Sinica. Sample was taken from surveys in 2000, 2001 and 2002, including 2504 seventh-grade to ninth-grade junior high school students in Taipei and Yilan. Measurement of research variables were based on related items in the database. Results and discussion: The results of this study indicated that the scores of self-concept and depression in both male and female adolescents are stable across time, and the correlation strength between self-concept and depression is higher than that of self-concept and peer social support, as well as peer support and depression. In terms of gender differences, male adolescents have higher self-concept than females, and female adolescents have higher peer support and depression compared to males. For male adolescents self-concept and depression demonstrated reciprocal relationship, namely, self-concept significantly predicted subsequent levels of depression, and depression also significantly predicted subsequent levels of self-concept. As for female adolescents, depression had the same predictive effect on self-concept as male adolescents, but self-concept did not significantly predict subsequent levels of depression. The mediating influence of peer social support on depression and self-concept shows a partial mediation effect only among male adolescents, with no such effect among female adolescents. According to the results of this study, teachers and counselors should promote mental health education, enabling adolescent students to increase their awareness of the signs of depression, and to enhance their self-concept in curricular or extra-curricular activities, so as to improve mental well-being. Keywords: Adolescent, self-concept, peer social support, depression.
