The purpose of this paper is to study the relationship between recreational participation and academic performance of middle school students in Meinong District of Kaohsiung City, particularly to identify discrepancies between the background variables and to conduct predictions on the degree of impact that the range of background variables may have on academic performance. Samples are chosen from middle school students in Meinong District of Kaohsiung City, using convenience sampling with middle school classes as sampling units. The samples are processed through descriptive statistics, Chi-squared test, correlation coefficient and regression analysis, to examine the following hypotheses: (1) middle school students with different background variables show significant discrepancy in recreational participation; (2) middle school students with different background variables show significant discrepancy in academic performance; (3) the recreational participation of middle school students show significant correlation with academic performance. The results of the study are the following: There is significant discrepancy on the timing when students use their monthly allowance on recreational activities. Gender and the frequency of using monthly allowances also show significant discrepancies. Certain recreational activities show significant correlation with students’ gender, the highest degrees of their parents, the parents’ attitude towards recreational activities and students’ monthly allowance. Knowledge-related recreational activities have significant correlation with academic performance. Relaxation-related recreational activities show negative correlation with academic performance. Academic performance has a positive correlation with the degree of the parents’ education, the parents’ support of students’ recreational participation, and the degree of the students’ participation in knowledge-related recreational activities. Conversely, the students’ participation in recreational activities have a negative correlation with the students’ academic performance.
