With limited research paying attention to special education teachers’ English teaching, the purpose of the present study was to explore the challenges faced by special education teachers for teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) to special education needs (SEN) in junior high schools in Taiwan. One hundred and five participants who have taught EFL to SEN for at least one semester were recruited by convenience sampling. Most of them were female, and about half of them had less than five years of English teaching. Four instruments were used in the present study, including a survey investigating the perceptions toward the EFL teaching challenges, an open-ended questionnaire, class observations as well as semi-structured interviews. Data analysis contained both descriptive statistics and transcript coding. The results showed that the participants had a moderate level perception toward the overall challenges. In addition, student’s factor was the most challenging category while the school support was the least. There were no significant differences between the five categories with teaching years. The main findings of the interviews indicated two different coping strategies had been carried out by the special education teachers when facing dilemmas, including solving the problem by themselves and looking for help. Moreover, the interviewees raised the lack of English related in-service training. Through presenting the empirical findings, it is hoped that the present study will facilitate the understanding of challenges and coping strategies on EFL teaching by special education teachers in Taiwan. Ultimately, pedagogical suggestions were provided to future and in-service special education teachers, school administration, and expert team of special education to help special education teachers minimize their challenges, and become more efficient EFL teachers.
