Maurice Sendak was the first American children’s book illustrator who won the Christian Anderson Award and the Caldecott Medals for seven times. He was well-known as "the greatest author and illustrator” since the beginning of the picture book for one hundred year. Without doubts, he had a remarkable place in children’s literature and dominated the quality of creating picture books. This study analyzed Maurice Sendak’s work and his methods of writing picture books in order to understand the art of picture books. Calvino devotes his book Six Memos for the Next Millennium (The Charles Eliot Norton Lectures, 1985-86) and promote the five indispensable qualities which should be used in literature: lightness, quickness, exactitude, visibility, and multiplicity.
