A Key Word Study for 'Same Culture , Same Race' in Taiwan During the Japanese-ruled Period – Based on 'Taiwan Nichi Nichi Shinpo' and Taiwan National Library Image System for Periodicals of Japanese Ruled Period

In the newspaper in Taiwan during the Japanese-ruled period, “same culture, same race” (同文同種 in Chinese) is used to connect China and Japan, but few people knows about how this key word is created. Therefore, this study focuses on analyzing the articles using “same culture, same race” in Taiwan during the Japanese-ruled period. “Taiwan Nichinichi Shinpo” and National Taiwan Library Image System for Periodicals of the Japanese-ruled Period are used in this study for searching and collecting articles including “same culture, same race”. Search result shows “same culture, same race” are published during A.D.1898 and A.D.1940. By analysis of the relation between issue of article and time, it is observed that “same culture, same race” is used to ease up the impact of war to relation between China and Japan after Marco Polo Bridge Incident. When analyzing articles including “same culture, same race” in “Taiwan Nichinichi Shinpo” and National Taiwan Library Image System for Periodicals of the Japanese-ruled Period, it is found that the targeted objects of “same culture, same race” is Japan and Qing dynasty/China which includes the concept of expecting peace in East Asia. Before Marco Polo Bridge Incident, most of articles including “same culture, same race” is talking about business and trading. However, during Marco Polo Bridge Incident and World War II, articles including “same culture, same race” mentioned the cooperation between China and communists. That is, the articles including “same culture, same race” have different appearance before and after Marco Polo Bridge Incident. Furthermore, by using “same culture, same race”, besides linking the relation between China and Japan, the more important thing is to distinguish the difference between eastern culture and western culture, yellow man and white man. From above reason, the shape of Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere can be formed. As the special position of Taiwan in the relation between China and Japan, it is found “same culture, same race” is not only for external – China, but also for internal - Taiwan. That is, when an article including “same culture, same race” is published, it is not only to describe the relation between China and Japan, but also describing the relation between Japan and Taiwan. During the Japanese-ruled period, the relation between Japan and Taiwan was using as the basis of the relation between China and Japan, and is described as “same culture, same race”. It shows in external relationship of Japan, the colony, Taiwan, is regarding as a part of its metropolitan state, Japan, so as to link the relation between China and Japan. To sum up, “same culture, same race” in Taiwan during the Japanese-ruled period have its complexity due to the issues it involves. Besides, because of its change of appearance by time, the interpretation of “same culture, same race” becomes special. By discussing “same culture, same race” in Taiwan during the Japanese-ruled period, besides exploring a direction of reviewing the relation between race and space during the Japanese-ruled period, what’s more, by reviewing “same culture, same race”, it also can be used to realize articles on newspaper in Taiwan under the political relation of China and Japan.
