A Study of Countertransference Awareness and Coping Process of Parentified-Experienced Psychotherapists in the Counseling Relationship

The main purpose of this study is to explore the parentified-experiences of psychotherapists in their origin family, and the connotation, awareness and coping process of this experiences in counseling. In this study, purposive sampling method was adopted. Five psychotherapists with working experiences of more than one year were invited as research participants. In order to understand participants’ experiences, hermeneutic phenomenological methodology was used in the study, and a total of 9 transcripts were obtained by semi-structured interviews. The transcripts were analyzed by method of thematic analysis. Based on researcher’s interpretation to the transcripts, the data was presented in two contexts. The first context was “Concerning the Connotation of the Psychologist's Parentified-Experience in the Origin Family”. Four essential themes were generated: (1) Taking care of siblings life, family roles are promoted; (2) Satisfying the needs of the family as the first priority, relatively hidden true feelings; (3) Acting as a mediator for conflicts, feeling struggled; and (4) Exhausted with sacrificing but not getting equal recognition or care. The second context is “The Awareness and Response of the Countertransference Drawn by Parentified-Experience,” and five essential themes were generated: (1) Countertransference emerged and impacted on consultative relations; (2) Psychotherapists need to detect and occur the countertransference which had challenged the consultative boundaries; (3) Be sure to improve self-awareness skills outside the consultative environment; (4) Focusing on the current consultative relationship and understanding clients despite the occurrence of countertransference; and (5) Parentified-experiences could become the two-way benefits of consultancy. According to the findings, advices and introspections of future works of studies and practical work are provided.
