Interpersonal Relationship and Self-esteem of Disadvantaged Students: A Case Study on Cycling Tour Around Taiwan Held by Future Transformers

This study aimed to explore the relationship between interpersonal relationship and self-esteem of disadvantaged students. The research had been done with the method of questionnaire survey in order to unveil the current situation of interpersonal relationship and self-esteem. This study not only analyzed the difference of perceptions toward interpersonal relationship and self-esteem possessed by disadvantaged students with different backgrounds but also examined the relationship between these two variables. The results will be served as a reference to improve interpersonal relationship and self-esteem. The subject was about disadvantaged students who participated in the third session of cycling tour around Taiwan held by juridical association of Future Transformers. 135 samples were surveyed. Data from 127 usable samples were analyzed with statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson product-moment correlation. The conclusions of this study were as followed: 1. The perception of students who participated in cycling tour around Taiwan toward interpersonal relationship was high - averaged. 2. The perception of students who participated in cycling tour around Taiwan towards self-esteem was high - averaged. 3. The perception of students toward interpersonal relationship does not vary with different backgrounds. 4. The perception of students toward self-esteem does not vary with different backgrounds. 5. Interpersonal relationship was positively correlated to self-esteem. This study made some suggestions to relatively corporations, facilitators of experiential education and future related studies based on the results were as followed: 1. Predecessor’s experience is benchmarked to new partners. The potential of students can be inspired, their self-esteem and relationship can be improved through experiential learning as well. 2. Facilitators made the students reflect in the activity to enhance their self-awareness and build relationship with others by teamwork. 3. Future related studies can attempt other research methods to unveil the effectiveness of the event.
