An Action Research on Promoting Ethnic Identity of the Fifth Graders by Integrating the Bunun Culture into the Social Studies Domain Curriculum

Popis: | 106 The purpose of this action research was to examine the effect of integrating the Bunun culture into the social studies domain curriculum to enhance ethnic identity of fifth graders. The subjects were 10 fifth-grade students in Moon (alias) elementary school in Nantou County. They had participated in activities of integrating Bunun culture into social studies domain during this 7-week project. The curriculum, were based on the contents of Social Studies 5 textbook, published by Han Lin educational publishing corporation, and integrate the context of the history and development of the Bunun and the festivals and celebrations of the Bunun into the curriculum. The quantitative tools used in this study are compiled into the "Bunun Ethnic Identity Scale" by reference to the ethnic identity elements proposed by Jean S. Phinny. In addition, the researcher analyzed and concluded the collected data such as class observation logs, interviews, teaching reflection notes, and students’ learning feedbacks to further understand the students’ learning process and results. Finally, the analysis of the pre-test and post-test mean and standard deviation is carried out by descriptive statistics, and the quality data of the children are used for collation, analysis and induction as a supplement to the research results. The conclusions of the study were summarized as follows: 1.The difficulties the researcher encountered while implementing integrating the Bunun culture into the social studies domain curriculum activities had been solved. 2.The students’ ethnic identity proficiency can be enhanced through integrating the Bunun culture into the social studies domain curriculum activities. (1)The students’ sense of belonging of ethnic identity proficiency can be enhanced through integrating the Bunun culture into the social studies domain curriculum activities. (2)The students’ sense of attitude of ethnic identity proficiency can be enhanced through integrating the Bunun culture into the social studies domain curriculum activities. (3)The students’ self-identification of ethnic identity proficiency can be enhanced through integrating the Bunun culture into the social studies domain curriculum activities. (4)The students’ ethnic involvement of ethnic identity proficiency can be enhanced through integrating the Bunun culture into the social studies domain curriculum activities. (5)The students’ whole Ethnic Identity proficiency can be enhanced through integrating the Bunun culture into the social studies domain curriculum activities. 3.The process of integrating the Bunun culture into the social studies domain curriculum activites had promoted the researcher’s reflection and professional growth.
