Sociocultural Contexts and the Body Image of Men : Taking Fitness Exercise as an Example

The development of fitness sports seems to be a new trend in the sports industry. Not only do many people participate in variety types of sports, but rewrite the traditional impression that fitness is only for weight losing. In recent years, there are lots of studies on body and body image in the academic discipline, yet most of the literatures have focused on females. As a consequence, this research acquired 12 male interviewees who involved in fitness exercise, and the in-depth interviews were employed to explore those male fitness participant's body image and process of body shaping. According to the data analysis, this study has the following findings: 1.First, the process of male participation in fitness training has different recognitions for their ideal body image, which is deeply shaped by social culture they experienced. Therefore, if a man does not reach the goal set in his mind and is dissatisfied with his current image, it will lead to negative feelings and anxiety. 2.The process of body shaping is also related to the definition of good-looking because of the traditional image recognized by social culture. The traditional impression of the external image of men is nothing more than masculinity. The external image change brought about by fitness seems to be in line with the definition of masculinity in today's society. Therefore, fitness is considered to be one of the important strategies to shape masculinity.
