Reliability and Validity of the Chinese Version of The Memorial Anxiety Scale for Prostate Cancer

Popis: | 107 Background: Patients with prostate cancer often experience anxiety over disease diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. The Memorial Anxiety Scale for Prostate Cancer (MAX-PC) has been widely applied to assess specific anxiety commonly experienced by patients with prostate cancer. However, Chinese scale is nokavailable domestically for the assessment of such anxiety. Objective: This study aimed to test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the MAX-PC. Methods: This study adopted convenience sampling to recruit outpatients in the urology departments of two medical centers in northern Taiwan and a regional hospital in central–southern Taiwan. A total of 101 patients with prostate cancer were recruited; data were collected through structured questionnaires ezncluding the 18-item MAX-PC, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and the 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey. Results: The reliability analysis results of the Chinese version of the MAX-PC showed that the total Cronbach’s α was .941, and the Cronbach’s α values for the subscales for general prostate cancer anxiety, anxiety related to prostate specific antigen (PSA), and fear of recurrence were .941, .774, and .781, respectively. Another set of data was obtained after a 2-week interval. This time, the Cronbach’s α for the overall Chinese version MAX-PC was .931, and those for the subscales on the general prostate cancer anxiety, PSA anxiety, and fear of recurrence were .941, .774, and .777, respectively. These results indicated that this scale exhibits favorable reliability. The 2-week test–retest reliability was measured through Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and the correlation coefficients of the overall scale and the subscales were as follows: for the MAX-PC, r = .841 (p < .01); for the prostate cancer memorial anxiety subscale, r = .846 (p < .01); for the PSA anxiety subscale, r = .794 (p < .01); and for the fear of recurrence subscale, r = .661 (p < .01). These results showed that this scale overall exhibits stable test–retest reliability. According to the results of confirmatory factor analysis, the factor loadings of all observed variables of the Chinese version of theMAX-PC were larger than 0.5, indicating convergent validity. The overall goodness of fit between the research data and the theoretical model was determined unsatisfactory (χ2 = 277.026, degrees of freedom [df] = 153, p = .001, root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 1.05, and confirmatory fit index [CFI] = .883). The model was then modified using modification indices to render it acceptable (χ2 = 197.452, df = 126, p = .001, RMSEA= .075, and CFI= .827). Finally, the results of the confirmatory factor analysis ensured that the Chinese version of the MAX-PC exhibits construct validity. The correlation coefficient between the Chinese version of the MAX-PC and the Negative Affect Schedule was .584 ( p < .01), indicating concurrent validity. The correlation coefficient between the Chinese version of the MAX-PC and the 12-item Short Form Health Survey was −.410 ( p < .01), and that between the Chinese version MAX-PC and the Positive Affect Schedule was −.230 ( p < .021). Therefore, the results of this study confirmed that the Chinese version of the MAX-PC exhibits discriminant validity. Conclusion and Application: The Chinese version of the MAX-PC exhibits favorable reliability and validity and can be applied to determine the anxiety level of Taiwanese patients with prostate cancer regarding the disease-specific anxiety.
