Sergey Sergeyvich Prokofiev (1891-1953) is one of the most prominent Russian composers and pianists of the 20th century. Among Prokofiev’s seven violin works, Violin Concerto no. 1 in D Major, Op. 19, is the first piece he composed in 1917. It encompasses all of his compositional characters: classical, modern, comical, lyric, and toccata character. It is more or less Classical in style but incorporates more modern musical elements, which seek to incorporate elements of all styles of music irrespective of whether these are "classical" or not—these efforts represent a slackening differentiation between the various musical generes. His compositions used the classical approach with the integration of modern harmonies plus an innovative approach to Russian music and so created a new style of composition. In this article, I intend to link up the era with which the composer lived, with his style of creation and unique techniques, and then analyze the form, harmony and tonality of this work to get the viewpoint for performance. We are desirous of conveying the original mind of the composer by this analysis when performing the work, followed by penetrating into the techniques, mastering the desired timbre, and the various methods for violin practice, in order to achieve the most appropriate way for performance. In addition to a general survey of Prokofiev’s music style, we hope to reach a better understanding of his unique creativity when performing the work. By this study we should be able to develop and reach into a more imaginative interpretation.
