In Taiwan, family firms are sources of economic development, and innovation is engine for business growth. This study explores how resources allocation of family firms affect innovation activities. We target at four factors: human capital, financial capital, governance mechanism and social capital respectively. If a family firm provides employees training opportunities, diversifies business to spread risks, sets up independent director mechanism to separate family power from business and builds shareholders connection. We conclude it supports robust long term future of development and innovation for family firms. This study dichotomizes industry environment and family SEW objectives. It differentiates four categories: Entrepreneurial Innovators, Conservative Innovators, Tardy Innovators and Turnarounds. Entrepreneurial innovators have more opportunities to develop innovation activities; however, conservative innovators’ reaction to innovation is slower because of low-velocity environment. Also, tardy innovators exist family conflict and management entrenchment due to family power, which may restrict innovation. About turnarounds innovators, sometimes founder failed to provide the next generation with resources and skills to innovate so that they transform to survive. We divided into two types: successful or not. The results show that family firms belong to high-velocity environment tend to build vertical social capital, and those firms in low-velocity prefer horizontal one.
