The Study on the Effectiveness of Music Group on Psychological and Social Functions with on the Patient Depressive Disorder of a Hospital Psychiatric Department in Southern Taiwan

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of musical activities toward psychological and social functioning of patients with depression. The research was mainly held in psychiatry department at a regional hospital in Southern Taiwan. To enrich the depth and breadth of the content, thematic exploration on nine participants was held mainly on qualitative research while quantitative research, using purposive sampling, subsidiary. Quantitative results were gathered based on Ko Depression Inventory (KDI) and Chinese Happiness Inventory (CHI), and then were analyzed with descriptive statistics. On the other hand, deep interviews were used to establish relationships between participants and researchers in qualitative research. During the musical activities, graduate students worked as helpers, observed them personally, and recorded the interaction between the leader and the participants to understand group dynamics and patients’ performances. In the two weeks after musical activities ended, final interviews were held to evaluate the effects. 1. Quantitative results are as follows: (1) According to their KDI results, 89% of the participants were in major depression status in the seven days before participating in musical activities. (2) The CHI results show improvement in psychological well-being after participating in musical activities, especially in working achievement, engagement, and participation. The results thus indicate positive elevation of their psychological and social function. 2. Qualitative results, listed seven of them, are as follows: (1) Participants wanted to go outside because of musical activities. (2) Participants learned to love and cherish themselves more. (3) Participants strengthened the bonds with their families. (4) Participants improved their interpersonal interactions. (5) Participants clarified their family roles. (6) Participants learned from the music teacher and taught those who suffer from the same situation as they did. (7) Participants were bothered by practical details when going back home but felt better when recalling the musical activities participated in the morning. The study primarily presents positive effects on psychological and social functioning of participants with depression in musical activities. Finally, conclusion and concrete suggestions were proposed based on the study results. I hope this study can be references to related clinical practices and studies in the future.
